“Lost” Parts

TYPE OF WORK Individual Coursework (6 weeks)

YEAR2019
OVERVIEW
“Lost Parts” is a prototype to connect unused body parts with unused domestic space. Inspired by an auto-ethnography during COVID pandemic lock down with my cats, the projects tends to reconsider the idea of shared space at home with nonhuman beings. The prototype is comprised of a set of bell attachment to body that exaggerates human body movements to rigger a perfume device at another part of the households that attract cats to play.

The Prototype

I. On Body Bell Attachments

II. Sound Receiver and Scent Dispenser

The System

While sitting and working at a table, bell attachments will exaggerate perception of body parts’ movements to trigger the sound dispenser.

Reflection

There is never an end to self-discovery. While we are immersed in products, especially technological ones, we are putting more attention externally instead of examine internally. Screens grab our eyes all day from working, online meetings to leisure activities. By exploring senses like smells and sound, this project gives me inspiration to focus on minute behaviour and pay attention to those “less obvious” body parts. With more time, more sensual triggers can be explored in the future like touch and heat.  Also the underlying question that needs to be examined is: where is the threshold of our senses if there is one?
